Introduction Into Mobile Internet Options
Mobile Internet Options come in all shapes and sizes, you want to make sure the one you choose fits your needs. This post will help clarify what each product does and what use it is intended for. When thinking about cellular service remember when in the RV you are in a metal box that is diminishing your cellular reception, the idea is to capture the signal from the outside with an antenna and bring it inside the RV to be distributed with an inside antenna, router or even a mobile hotspot. The simplest way to understand it is that something has to receive the signal from outside and something has to distribute the signal on the inside, where it gets a little more complicated is making the appropriate choices for what will suit your individual needs and wants.
Cellular Provider Plans
This post will have no information about cellular provider plans like Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, Visible, Metro, Google Fi, Mint Mobile, Consumer Cellular, Boost Mobile, Xfinity Mobile, Cricket, Straight Talk, and probably a bunch more we don’t know about. We will create a more informative post later with information about data plans and even third-party resellers of grandfathered unlimited data plans that will be more helpful.
Outside Omnidirectional Antennas and Directional Antennas
Let’s start outside since that is where the cellular signal is and we can work our way inside of the RV.
An omnidirectional antenna generally works well in areas where the cellular signal available is reflected from nearby objects, either natural or man-made objects. This Omnidirectional antenna has a 360-degree beam width and does not have to be pointed in a certain direction to pick up signals. Omni Directional Antennas is a good option when the cellular signal is strong and is typically the most suitable for a majority of people.
Directional Antennas are the best solution when available signals are weak. This directional antenna is recommended far more often than an omnidirectional antenna when the distances from the signal source are greater as it has double the gain and it also works with the frequency bands commonly used for 4G LTE.
Inside Omnidirectional Antennas and Directional Antennas
Now that we have captured the signal with our outside antenna we are ready to distribute it inside of the RV.
Inside the RV you will have an antenna to distribute the signal you acquire from the outside antenna, this inside antenna will be either Onni Directional (typically desktop) or Directional (typically a wall-mounted panel). The Omni Directional Desktop Antenna range for distributing the signal for your devices is not as strong as a Directional Panel Antenna so you will need to be as close to the desktop antenna as possible. The Directional Panel Antenna will distribute the signal inside the RV to a much larger space therefore you can use it for more devices like the smart TV, computer, etc.
Mobile Hotspot Option
The Mobile Hotspot does two things, it receives the cellular signal and distributes the signal to other devices so it acts and the receiving outside antenna and acts as the inside omnidirectional antenna distributing the signal to your devices. The Mobile Hotspot will not get a good signal from inside the RV so it needs that external antenna connection to get the most out of it. When connecting directly to an outside antenna you won’t necessarily need a booster in the setup. We will create another post later that will go into greater detail about setting up a mobile hotspot with an outside antenna.
The Verizon Wireless Jetpack 8800L 4G LTE Advanced Mobile Hotspot is one of the better choices because it has the ability to connect to an external antenna. If you are not using Verizon another option that connects to an external antenna is the NETGEAR Nighthawk M1 Mobile Hotspot 4G LTE Router MR1100-100NAS.
With the Mobile Hotspot Option, you will need a SIM Card from a cellular service provider like Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.
Simple LTE Signal Booster
Who Will Benefit?
People that are relatively close to a cell tower in somewhat populated or highly populated areas.
RVs Best Suited For
Smaller Class A, Class C & Class B
For
Boosting signal for RVs when moving/ in-motion OR parked. It boosts signal of multiple cell phones or cellular devices with SIM card, simultaneously.
Boost signal reception inside rec. vehicles with stronger connection to respective network’s cell tower. Strong connection means fewer missed or dropped calls, fewer incoherent conversations, fewer Internet hang-ups or freezing / buffering.
Benefits
If you require a reliable signal for voice & text, as well as a high-speed 4G LTE internet connection, this unit will provide you with extra reach when you’re far away from cell towers.
This signal booster is perfect for people that need fast uploading and downloading of streaming apps like Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, Pandora, and other apps that are data-intensive
Exterior Antenna is an omnidirectional antenna that permanently mounts on the roof of the RV.
Interior Antenna is an omni directional desktop antenna with a short range so it is best to be near the antenna to get the full benefit.
